Schools around the country offering online instructional design programs charge students a median tuition of $6,871 per year. The median tuition has increased, over the past few years, by 23.8%. In 2007, the annual median tuition was $5,549 at these online schools.

At the high end, schools with online instructional design programs charge students more than $16,500 in tuition per annum. However, annual tuition charged by the cheapest schools ranges from $3,347 to $5,406. Florida, Idaho, Texas, and West Virginia are home to the most inexpensive accredited online instructional design schools.

In 2011, of all instructional design graduates from online colleges and universities in the nation, an estimated 31% earned credentials from these cheap programs. This represents 141,210 of the 455,153 graduates from around the US. From 2006 to 2011, the number of instructional design graduates from the least costly online colleges has increased by 32,445 graduates per annum. However, the percentage of graduates from these colleges has decreased.

Other somewhat more expensive online instructional design colleges and universities charge students tuition ranging from $5,472 to $6,672 per year. Tuition in this range is charged by 5 of the 20 online colleges that have instructional design programs in the country.

In 2011, 106,983 students received their credentials from these reasonably priced online programs. This represents 24% of the country’s instructional design graduates. Only 92,107 students graduated from these colleges, only 5 years earlier, in 2006. Therefore, from these reasonably priced online colleges and universities, the number of students graduating has increased by 16%.
